Who Is a Good Candidate for Thermage FLX?

A good Thermage candidate is usually an adult with mild to moderate skin laxity, early jowling or crepey skin who wants gradual, natural-looking firming without surgery or downtime. Thermage FLX tends to suit people from their 30s to 50s who still have reasonable collagen reserves, while those with significant sagging, certain implanted devices or active skin problems may need a different approach.

How Thermage works, in brief

Thermage FLX uses monopolar radiofrequency (RF) energy to heat the deeper dermis and fibrous tissue under the skin. The heat contracts existing collagen and stimulates new collagen over two to six months. Because the effect depends on your own collagen response, the right candidate is someone whose skin can still respond well to that stimulus.

Thermage candidate checklist: you may be suitable if...

  • You have mild to moderate laxity: skin that looks slightly looser along the jaw, cheeks or neck, but not heavily folded or hanging.
  • You notice texture changes: crepey skin, fine lines or reduced bounce, especially around the eyes or on the neck.
  • You want subtle, gradual change: you prefer a refreshed look over a dramatic transformation.
  • You need little or no downtime: most people return to work or sightseeing the same day.
  • You are planning maintenance: you are happy to repeat treatment roughly once a year to keep results.
  • You are generally healthy: good overall health supports the healing response that builds collagen.
  • You have realistic expectations: you understand results build over months and vary between people.

Thermage may not be the best choice if...

  • You have significant sagging: heavy jowls, deep folds or marked neck laxity often need surgical options or a combined plan.
  • Your main concern is volume loss: hollow cheeks or temples usually respond better to fillers or collagen-stimulating injectables.
  • You want instant, dramatic results: Thermage works gradually.
  • Your skin is very thin with little collagen reserve: response may be limited, and a doctor may suggest other options first.

Who should avoid Thermage or get medical clearance first

These are common contraindications or cautions. Your doctor will make the final judgement based on your history.

  • Implanted electronic devices: pacemakers, implantable defibrillators and similar devices are a standard contraindication for monopolar RF.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding: elective energy treatments are generally postponed.
  • Active skin infection, open wounds or inflamed acne in the treatment area.
  • Metal implants in the area: discuss these with your doctor, as they may affect planning.
  • Recent fillers or threads: not always a contraindication, but timing and areas may need adjusting.
  • Conditions affecting healing: poorly controlled diabetes, autoimmune disease or certain medications may require caution.
  • Recent isotretinoin use or other treatments that sensitise the skin: mention these so the doctor can advise on timing.

Age: is there a "right" age for Thermage?

There is no fixed age. Many people start in their mid-30s when the first signs of laxity appear, using it as a preventive or maintenance step. People in their 40s and 50s often see visible firming of mild jowls and neck laxity. Older patients can still benefit, but results may be more modest and a combination plan is often more effective. Skin quality matters more than the number on your passport.

Areas that suit Thermage

  • Face and jawline: mild jowling and a softened contour.
  • Eyes: crepey eyelid skin and mild hooding, using a dedicated eye tip.
  • Neck: early laxity and fine horizontal lines.
  • Body: loose skin on the abdomen, arms, thighs or above the knees.

Questions to ask at your consultation

  1. Am I a good candidate, or would another treatment suit my concern better?
  2. How many shots do you recommend, and for which areas?
  3. Will a doctor perform or supervise the treatment?
  4. Will I see the genuine tip opened and the shot count confirmed?
  5. Should Thermage be combined with ultrasound lifting, skin boosters or fillers for my goals?
  6. What results are realistic for my skin, and when should I come back for review?

How to prepare if you are a good candidate

  • Share your full medical history and any previous procedures.
  • Avoid strong sun exposure and tanning before treatment.
  • Pause harsh exfoliants or irritating products for a few days if your doctor advises.
  • Take clear photos beforehand so you can compare later.

Frequently asked questions

Am I too young for Thermage?

Many people in their late 20s or early 30s have little laxity and may not need it yet. A doctor can tell you whether treatment would make a visible difference.

Can Thermage replace a facelift?

No. It can improve mild to moderate laxity, but it does not lift tissue the way surgery does. For significant sagging, surgery may be the more effective option.

Is Thermage suitable for darker skin tones?

Radiofrequency does not target pigment, so it is generally considered suitable for a wide range of skin tones. Your doctor will still assess your individual risk.

Can I have Thermage if I have fillers?

Often yes, but tell your doctor what was injected, where and when. They may adjust timing or settings.
